Creative Team Bio

Chicago is Jess’ 18th show with BMMS. She began as the Assistant Director of Annie (2008) where she met her now husband and favourite Music Director, Matt. Graduating from the Australian Academy of Dramatic Art with a Bachelor of Performance in 2010 where she focused on Directing and Stage Management, Jess fairly quickly realised working in the theatre is a terrible idea and jumped ship accordingly. This allowed her to return to enjoying theatre as a hobby, she loves community theatre and particularly enjoys having a job that earns a liveable wage. Unfortunately she then married a musician so was stuck in the more sparkly and loud world of musical theatre. Somehow BMMS took a chance on this musical grinch and allowed her to direct Sweeney Todd (2013). She apparently didn’t lose them too much money because they let her take on The Who’s Tommy (2015), and then Jesus Christ Superstar (2017). She appeared onstage as Mazeppa in Gypsy (2019), Officer Lockstock in Urinetown (2018), Ursula in The Little Mermaid (2017), and Judah in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2016), having also been Stage Manager and Hair & Makeup for a number of shows. She dedicates her spare time to volunteer work and advocacy in the human rights space.

Creative Team Bio

I always struggle writing my own bio, and if you enjoy the show, my experience or popularity really doesn’t matter, does it? Despite that, you’re probably wondering why her? Aside from being highly inappropriate, overly energetic and genuinely hilarious, I started dancing at age 7, and choreographing for things the public actually watched at age 13. I’ve performed in a number of BMMS shows + choreographed Jesus Christ Superstar, and played a minor role as Carla in Blackout’s Theatre Co’s ‘In The Heights’ in 2017. I have since torn my ACL and not yet had surgery so, performing is on the back burner for now. Hip hop and salsa are my favourite styles, but I am a die hard fan of ballet and irish dancing - #michaelflatleybemysilverfox. I studied dance full time at Urban Dance Centre in 2010 but after changing my career and purpose I now work for our public health system whilst juggling a toddler. Chicago is an all time favourite for most musical lovers, but I hope you see worth and familiarity in our choices. Dance is my extracurricular passion of which allows me to express emotionally and physically. It is truly a humbling experience to be able to share that with you, our audience, the reason we create and perform, so thank you!

Prior to the mysterious performance void of the past two years, Ri regaled audiences with hilarious torment as Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar (BMMS, 2017) as well as unusually welsh bravado in Urinetown (BMMS, 2018) and, quite remarkably, not-a-lot-of-harmonica-playing in The Who's TOMMY (BMMS, 2015).
