Blue Mountains Musical Society’s new production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic has enough subtle differences to make it fresh, without jettisoning any of the much-loved features of the film version.

Blue Mountains Musical Society has pulled out all the stops (and ALL the glitter) to present this simply fabulous adaptation of Baz Luhrmann’s much-loved movie – and it delivers in spandex-covered spades

And what can you say about the talented cast of youths who steal the show at every opportunity? Well just wow! They act, they sing, they dance, they play instruments and they are funny too!

BMMS’s productions are always a great advertisement for the calibre of musicians we are lucky to have in the Blue Mountains and this production really elevates that strength. The 13-piece band’s performance of John Kander’s jazz-inspired music is crucial to the show’s success.

The opening night performance played to a packed house at the Blue Mountains Theatre in Springwood and the energy and enthusiasm lit up the room from the start of the overture until the last note rang out on Waterloo.

The expert casting extends to the featured ensemble who make each of their multiple roles memorable, no matter how small.

With great music, excellent dramatic moments and plenty of laughs the story of Gypsy is larger than life. And the cast do an excellent job of bringing all that energy to the stage in what is a thoroughly entertaining night of theatre.

The singing is wonderful – we’ve come to expect nothing less from this talented troupe – and the choreography is top notch.

As always the Blue Mountains Musical Society’s ensemble work is excellent and the costumes, set and choreography are on point. But it is the music – and the incredible voices of these talented people – that will blow you away.

Every cast member from the main characters to the hard-working ensemble gives it their singing-and-dancing all in a show which will leave you smiling.

Depth of talent is one of the musical society’s strengths and it is on display again in Superstar.

The feel-good show brims with energy and humour and is certain to have its family audiences leaving on a high.

The production’s simple but effective set puts the focus rightly on the performances while the 17-piece orchestra, performing live from an adjoining studio, do more than justice to Leonard’s Bernstein’s unforgettable music.
